Faith in the Infinite

Faith in the solitude.

The pervasive belief in something larger than ourselves.

Flame of Dedication

Flame of Dedication, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

Hundreds of thousands of Thais pay homage to King Bhumibol Adulyadej during his birthday celebration. At sunset, everyone raises their candle and sings to their king. The chorus of voices is breathe taking. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands in the back ground.

Unless one has visited Thailand, there can be no true understanding of how much the Thais love and respect their king. He is their compass. The country wears yellow every Monday to honor the man who has worked for his people and every year they celebrate his birthday. The sense of union and harmony that night is one of those treasures that reassure us that we can live in peace. My heart went into over drive knowing that it was time to record this night and attempt to create an image that communicated the awe striking harmony among such a large mass of people. I got lucky with a surprise fireworks show that seemed to complement the sea of candles and the voices of the angels singing to their king.

Surfing via Cycling

Surfing via Cycling, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

Although probably not a common site on most of the planet, in the beach communities bicycles adapted to handle one's surf board is. If your lucky enough to live close to the beach, your also unlucky enough to know how scarce and difficult parking can be. Bicycles not only become a tool to keep in tune with childhood memories of exploring the world before the days of an auto license but also become the ever faithful mode of transportation.

Chaos Causeway

Chaos Causeway, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

This Sunday, April 5th the Thai people of Los Angeles, as well as other Angeleno’s, will be celebrating Song Kran (Thai New Year.) It also marks the introduction of the photography exhibit, “City of Angels. Bangkok. Los Angeles. Two Cities. One Name.” This work reveals the striking similarities (often times identical) of two cities that possess the same name. Angelsofthecity.com provides more insight and understanding of this project. Thainewyear.com supplies more information on the festival in its entirety.

This photo is a merging of two different causeways of crowds. The patterns of people and movement always remind me of the Chaos Theory.

The Story of King Narasuan

The Story of King Narasuan, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

An important part of Thai history is the story of King Narasuan. He is the leader who reunited the Siamese people after many years of conflict. The play was conducted for free in one of the parks in Bangkok. In honor of the opening of the photographic exhibition - "City of Angels" "Bangkok-Los Angeles" "Two Cities. One Name." These images are part of that body of work that honors the beauty of both people.

Fancy Dress Swim

Fancy Dress Swim, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

One of the more creative fundraisers for poverty in Los Angeles involved finding a sponsor then dressing up in fancy dresses and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. What more could a person want from a fund raiser! (Except more money of course.) In honor of the opening of the photographic exhibition - "City of Angels" "Bangkok-Los Angeles" "Two Cities. One Name." These images are part of that body of work that honors the beauty of both people.

Khon BKK Style รำไทย

รำไทย
Khon, one of the traditional performance arts from Thailand, boasts of heavily adorned costumes and amazing muscle control as the performers silently act out the story on the stage. Some costumes require at least two people and about an hour to actually put on. One of the important aspects of this art form is the shape the hands make as it appears that the dancers are attempting to make their fingers touch the back of their arm.

Christmas in Bangkok

Christmas in Bangkok, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

With Christianity having the tiniest presence in this predominantly Buddhist city, it was nice to have the familiar Christmas tree during the holidays. The lights in this shot are part of a much larger tree that was made out back lit crystals that changed colors. Crowds were often entertained in this plaza, Siam Paragon. This area serves as the central hub for three malls and the junction of the two rail lines that serve as part of Bangkok's public transportation.

Cambodian Candy Trade

1-_DSC1426, originally uploaded by Curtisvision.

Making sugar candies out of sugar cane. The bamboo wrappers hold the warm soft cane until it hardens. Sooooo sweet!

This lady was part of a family of 6. Her husband warmed the sugar cane and stirred it while she made the candy wrappers. The children were either watching or playing on their bikes until we showed up. Then my friend and I were the center of attention. Such beautiful people.

I love the mystery and wonderment that comes with a new land. It creates such a humbling experience to see others fighting the same struggle to live and be happy. All one!
